The President’s Palette

This month I am adding two colors: anger and frustration (pick your own hews). Here it is April 21st and our addition to the building has not yet been started. No one is more disappointed than me. Here is an update on the project. We signed a contract with the builder in early December of 2007.  He requested that construction not start until after the Christmas holidays and I agreed. He was reminded that our building permit from Labor & Industry required that construction had to start before February 21st.  An agreement was reached in early February that the front sidewalk would be constructed as the starting element; however, cold weather prevented that from happening. On February 22nd the Labor & Industry inspector threatened to revoke our building permit; but, with a few frantic phone conversations, he agreed to accept the contract signing as the start date.  With that crisis behind us, the contractor requested that because of the cold weather, construction be delayed until after the Easter holidays. This is the fifth week after Easter (and the past four weeks have had good building weather) but the only progress has been delivery of a construction trailer to the site. The most recent delay is awaiting removal of the pine trees at the corner of the building which was supposed to occur last week. Now the contractor doesn’t believe the trees have to be removed. Hopefully, by the time you read this, construction will have started with excavation for the basement. Once construction begins, the building should go up rather fast as it is a simple rectangular structure. I hope that the finish work that we must do will be completed before October but the track record has not been very good so far.  But keep the faith; we will have the building addition completed before the end of the year (I hope!).
