VARNISHINGS

One of my favorite winter songs starts out with “Oh, the weather outside is frightful”; it ends with “Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!”. After the first twenty days of this month, I DON’T LIKE THAT SONG ANY MORE. The deep snow caused many hardships and cancellations that disrupted our lives. It also brought back memories of the great snow of 1950. This snow and that snow both started on a Friday. On the following Sundays the national guard was called out to help the city of Pittsburgh clear the streets of snow. This year the guard arrived in Humvees. In 1950, I was in the guard and had to walk four miles through knee high snow to get to the armory in East Liberty. I was there for a week They did a much better job of getting rid of the snow 59 years ago than they did this year. In 1950 we stopped ALL vehicles from entering the golden triangle for three days. Highlifts and trucks removed all the snow from all streets and dumped it in the rivers. Back then there were no follow-on snows like we have had this year.

But despite the snow, the contributions for the Cantini project are coming in. At the time of this writing, we have 22 contributions totaling $1930. Raising money is a lot like a snow fall. A flake here, a few more, soon there is enough to sweep. Later there is enough to shovel. $10, $25, $50, soon we have enough to fund our project. So join in; make your contribution before March 10th so it can be doubled by the matching grant.

The spring class schedule for GAC was released in the middle of this month. Congratulations to all who put this schedule together and to all who offered to be teachers. This is an impressive selection of class opportunities; particularly the classes for children and young adults. Promote these classes to your friends and neighbors. Take advantage of the many opportunities to improve your own skills. The ground work has been done; now its up to you members to take advantage of this work and build on it.
